Ohhh Spanish 1. Sometimes I love 2nd period and hate 4th period, sometimes I love 4th period and hate 2nd period. It all depends on the activities: if it's interactive and requires you to participate, 4th period is awesome; if it's studious, 2nd period is better. I think the hardest thing for me is making sure kids aren't sleeping. It's easier if they're just not on task, but when they're not being disruptive, just being lazy/sleeping, I have less motivation to mess with them. I still do, but grrrr, after so many times of talking to them about it, it's so tempting to just let them do their thing. It's not like we haven't warned them... the worst part is, most of them are repeaters. Don't you want to pass this class so you can move on? Geez.

  1. Motivation is a tricky thing. Educational psychologists spend a great deal of time trying to understand what motivates students and how they are motivated. Nobody has a definitive answer. What we do know is that students tend to give up if they don't perceive that anyone cares, or they fail to see the connection to their life. Part of the problem lies with the way schools are set up, part of it we as teachers can affect.
